CHAPTER 21
âGet out and don't ever come near me again!â
Blue ducked as his duffel bag rocketed toward him, spewing a T shirt and a pair of socks on the way like a space craft shedding its thrusters. âHey! Iâm sorry, okay?â He rolled off the rumpled bed and stood.
âYouâre sorry? Is that all you can say?â Bethâs nostrils flared.
âWhat more do you want?" Blue bent to pick up the bag and the stray items, and stuffed them inside. âIt was nothing.â
âNothing? Calling me by another womanâs name while weâre making out is nothing?â Beth stood across the room, hands on hips.
Blue advanced cautiously. âI thought you just wanted to have some fun. Isnât that what we were doing?â
"I'm not interested in being runner up. Now, get out of my apartment before I call the cops."
By the look on Bethâs face there would be no arguing. With a sigh, Blue turned away from her seething countenance and found his shirt lying at the foot of the bed where heâd shed it only moments before. He thrust his arms in the sleeves, not bothering to button it, and then zipped the duffel bagâs closure with a jerk. He gave it one last shot. âYouâre sure about this? It really was just a slip of the tongue.â
âGet out!â she yelled.
Blue put his hands up in surrender before slinging the duffel bag over one shoulder. He found his shoes near the bedroom door, and strode from her tiny apartment without another backward glance. If she wanted to be stubborn about it, then he could be, too.
So much for a weekend getaway. So much for exorcising his demons. Blue walked to his truck and tossed the limp bag onto the passenger seat. He started the truck with a roar and jerked it into gear. He just hoped Beth wouldn't spew to her uncle.
Heâd arrived in Dallas yesterday with every intention of courting Beth. Their first evening together had been nice and they'd even ended with more than a little heated kissing. Beth had wanted him to stay the night with her but Big John's remark about getting his own room was still ringing in Blue's ears. Either that or he was making an excuse.
Their second evening together promised to be different, however. Blue was determined to put all thoughts of Cherise Hillyer out of his mind and if that meant getting down and dirty, then so be it. Somewhere between dinner and a night cap at Beth's apartment, things had gotten hot and heavy. And then it happened. He'd said Cherise's name and all hell broke loose.
Served him right. He would have done the same had their roles been reversed.
With a sigh, Blue pulled out of Beth's parking lot and merged into the traffic on the street. There had to be more to life than chasing his own tail. Despite the late hour, heâd head straight to the ranch since he wouldnât be able to sleep anyway. Perhaps there he'd find some peace.
